Our Treatments

This section contains some brief information about how and what we treat.

Neck and Back Pain

Chiropractors are best known for manual treatments such as spinal manipulation, where they use their hands to free stiff or restricted joints, or mobilisation, which is the gradual moving of joints. The chiropractor will carry out a full examination and ask you questions about your posture, medical history and lifestyle, to try and discover the cause of your neck or back pain and offer a diagnosis of your complaint. Then your treatment will begin, often with gentle, specific adjustments done by hand, to free stiff joints and remove spinal nerve irritation.

Sports Injuries

Chiropractic treatment for sports injuries concentrates on manipulative adjustments to your spine, joints and muscles, so allowing them to move correctly, and advice on rehabilitation and maintenance excercises to improve strength and flexibility. As chiropractic does not involve drugs or surgery, there is no risk of the side-effects associated with these treatments. In addition to the treatment of injuries, the chiropractor can carry out pre-season checks on athletes to identify, treat and strengthen any weak areas before injuries occur, and also conduct regular check-ups to maintain optimum performance.

Babies, Children and Pregnant Women

Chiropractic is a health care system that does not use drugs - an important consideration particularly during pregnancy. The many physical and chemical changes in a woman's body at this time can aggravate existing spinal problems, and can also make the spine and pelvis unstable through the relaxation of the ligaments together with postural changes. Chiropractic care can help to correct any restricted joint movement and maintain spinal balance, as well as ensuring that the pelvis is correctly aligned - both before and after your baby is born.

A study in Denamark revealed that when spinal adjustments were given to 316 infants with colic, 94% of them were relieved of symptoms within a two week period of treatment. When you or your child attend the clinic, the chiropractor will take a thorough medical history and will conduct standard neurological and orthopaedic tests to determine whether spinal motion is normal. Treatment normally consistes of gentle adjustments to parts of the spine which are not moving properly.

Headache and Migraine

The chiropractor is trained to diagnose the cause of your headache, and treat you accordingly, or refer you elsewhere if appropriate. Treatment involves specific adjustments, particularly to the neck and upper back, and especially for tension headache, soft tissue massage. The painkilling drugs so often used to treat headache do not address the cause, and so cannot bring the improvement that chiropractic can offer.

Whiplash

After taking a medical history, the chiropractor will examine you carefully to assess whether your neck is moving properly. This involves examining the muscles, nerves, joints, ligaments and tendons. Then your treatment will begin with often gentle, specific adjustments to your neck. This will decrease the pain and restore normal movement to the area, aiming to ensure that each joint is working at its best.

Wear and Tear

Degeneration of your joints cannot be reversed, but the chiropractor can help to improve muscle and joint function which in turn may help to reduce nerve irritation. Once he has performed a full assessment you will be advised on the most appropriate care for your condition. This may involve gentle, specific manipulation to treat the joints, reducing pain and inflammation. You may also be given advice about healthier habits in your lifestyle, workplace or favourite sport, as well as tips on exercise, diet and posture.
